A History-Maker

I am always drawn to people who shift the trajectory in spaces, time and culture. Our Mantra is, “Empowered Value, Empowering Value”. My antenna is perked whenever I meet someone or hear of someone who, embodies this mantra. One person who embodied that mantra was Madame C.J. Walker. When I heard about the life of this powerful woman, I was completely amazed. What is even more amazing than her accomplishment, is the time in which she accomplished her accomplishments. She dared to defy the odds to make the impact that she was created to make in the early 1900s. She refused to make excuses or succomb to the obstacles that existed for women and blacks, during that time. The world is now a better place, because she empowered others with her value. Here is her story as relayed in Wikipedia.

Madam C. J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. Walker is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records.[1] Multiple sources mention that although other women (like Mary Ellen Pleasant) might have been the first, their wealth is not as well-documented.[1][2][3]

Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of cosmetics and hair care products for Black women through the business she founded, Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company. Walker became known also for her philanthropy and activism. Walker made financial donations to numerous organizations such as the NAACP and became a patron of the arts. Villa Lewaro, Walker's lavish estate in the Irvington neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana served as a social gathering place for the African-American community. At the time of her death, Walker was considered the wealthiest African-American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made black woman in America.[4] Her name was a version of "Mrs. Charles Joseph Walker" after her third husband.
